“Well, aren’t you just a ray of sunshine this morning?” my friend Cas teased.

Mayne joined in with, “The boy’s walking on air.”

I flipped off my friends as I leaned forward to tighten the laces on my sneakers before we started our game. I got a little dizzy and shook my head as I listened to the guys catching up. A few times a month, my brothers and I got together with some old friends and played a half-court pickup game of basketball at a local park or our favorite gym.

Since it was raining today, we were inside waiting on Creed and Wrath to join us. Mayne, Cas, Adair, and Sylvan had already been there when I arrived with Thorn, Loki, and Derek. We’d all received a text from my brothers that let us know they were coming, but they’d gotten tied up with something at home so we should start without them.

Instead of starting our game, the guys decided it was time to pick on me.

“I heard birds chirping and saw little forest animals scampering around his feet as he was walking in from his truck,” Adair teased. “And I’m pretty sure he was humming a show tune.”

“He still looks like shit, but at least he’s happy,” Sylvan said as he studied my face. “You should come in and let me run some tests. Your color is off.”

“My color is off? That’s your professional diagnosis?” I asked.

“He’s probably just exhausted because Katrine was running through his dreams all night,” Cas teased. “Gonna have to get in a lot better shape to chase a woman like that. She’s used to sprinting after a herd of kids, man. She’ll leave you in the dust.”

“If she’s smart, that’s what she’s trying to do,” Adair added. “She’s got five, right? I can bet you she’s not looking for a sixth.”

“I am not a child,” I grumbled.

“You’re a big boy now,” I heard our friend Antony say from behind me. I turned around and he smiled at me before he asked, “Finally got the balls to hit on Katrine, I hear.”

“I had to get some shit in order before I asked her out.”

“Right. Like ridding himself of that parasite of an employee he’s had chasing him for months now,” Adair pointed out. “I don’t ever see her actually working out here, she’s just looking for you.”

“I thought you guys were bullshitting when you started teasing me about Megan, but I guess you weren’t.”

“No. We absolutely were not kidding,” Mayne said as he twirled the basketball on his index finger. “Clover said she’d warned you over and over too.”

I’d wondered how I’d feel when Mayne mentioned his relationship with Clover, and I was happy to note that it didn’t give me the slightest pang of jealousy or any other feelings for that matter. If anything, I was glad they were together. If anyone could handle her mercurial temper and wild ways, it was Mayne.

“How are things going with the two of you anyway?” Adair asked. “You know, the girls tried to hook me up with her before they realized I knew the family.
